Vietjet announces plans to open direct flights between Australia and Vietnam15 May 2018
Vietnam has long been an ideal destination for Australian tourists, because of its beautiful sunny beaches, luxurious resorts, vibrant urban cities with friendly locals and a delicious cuisine. However, many Australians are reluctant to book that first flight heading to Vietnam. There are few direct flights between Australia and Vietnam, so tourists may have to go through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore or endure a layover (typically anywhere from three to eight hours) before they can land in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.
Vietjet and Brisbane International Airport have signed an agreement to open direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, to promote tourism, trade and regional integration. The event was witnessed by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, senior leaders of the Australian Government and representatives of the two countries. The direct flights connecting the two cities are expected to be operational from 2019.
Julieanne Alroe, general manager and CEO of Brisbane International Airport, said that in the past five years, the frequency of travel between Queensland and Vietnam has increased by an average of 8% a year. Many new services have been introduced to the market development because while Ho Chi Minh City is one of Brisbane’s five largest markets, there are still no direct flights. "We hope Vietjet will soon launch flights to Brisbane Airport, thereby further tightening relations between Queensland and Vietnam," said Ms. Alroe.
Speaking at the recent forum, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the upcoming addition of direct flights from Vietjet will promote exchange, trade and investment between the two countries, especially in terms of the comprehensive and progressive agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. The Ho Chi Minh City-Brisbane route is also the first direct flight between the two cities with active support from Brisbane International Airport and Queensland Tourism.
Although 2019 is still a way off, it’s never too early to plan your next trip. With the new addition of these direct flights, be sure to keep Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City in mind when considering your next vacation.
